Squares Plus Quilt Pattern

Squares Plus Quilt Pattern | Whims And Fancies

I drew this simple and easy pattern quite a few months ago.  It all started with my wanting to make a plus pattern quilt, but I wanted to do a bit more than the traditional plus blocks.  While fiddling with the design, I added the little squares on top.  That became my Squares Plus pattern.  Then I got distracted by other shiny new things and it lay forgotten.

A few notes about the pattern –

The pattern includes both paper piecing AND regular piecing instructions.

This is a very beginner-friendly and scrap-happy pattern. It should be fun to use up some scraps for this block.  Charm packs can be used as well.

These were the two colourways that I was originally going to use. One day when I make a larger quilt using this pattern, I will probably go back to one of these two.

In June there was an abundance of yellow and orange colours in the photos I took for my Wandering Camera project.  Inspired by those colours, I made the first Squares Plus block.

It was such a fast block to make, I had the rest of the blocks done in no time.  Then a multitude of summer events happened and unfortunately they were stowed away.  Recently however, I really wanted to finish this quilt.

Remembering how much I enjoyed the wavy quilting on Floating At Dawn,

I quilted this one with wavy lines too.

The recipient of the quilt was keeping me company whilst I worked on it.

This little quilt reminds me of a breezy day in the midst of flowers, water and grass.  It makes me smile to see my beloved kitty sleeping peacefully on it, hopefully dreaming of the things I envisioned in the colours of this quilt.

It’s truly beautiful Soma! It has a 3D effect at times, like the small squares are floating on the plus. Smart, creative woman! :-)

What a simple and pretty pattern! I would love to see this scrappy as well. I really love that teal that is the background in your quilt. It is one of my favorite fabrics. I have a couple of yards on my shelf and this reminds me that I really need to use it. :)

Your newest quilt is just beautiful! I love the gold and blue colors you put together. Your dear kitty will look beautiful when sleeping on it! The wavy quilting is perfect… I think it gives the suggestion of wind , or energy , to the straight lines of the design. How fun to see your designs “come to life ” from your photo inspirations!
You have designed another awesome pattern, Renaissance Lady!

I really like the 3-D look that the extra plus gives, Soma. The wavy line quilting looks great on it. I love the comfortable perch that the recipient is enjoying. It looks pretty comfortable to me!
