Summer  is a time for me to stay indoors, clean up my workspace, get my act together and plan ahead, but always with room for spontaneity.    This year however, the planner pages remain empty.  I am finding myself increasingly wanting to work on and experiment with new materials and ideas.  That includes thinking of alternate twists on old stories.

Before I go into the story behind this painting, let me share another set of my Simple 365 photos.

Simple 365 – Set 1

Early this year, I started taking daily photos of simple, everyday things to remind me to be happy.  These are truly everyday photos that mostly reflect my days and my life.

A few months back, I was sketching of a gingerbread house right at the edge of the wood.

Originally, the witch at the door was not part of the painting.  I was thinking of sweets and icing for the house itself.  I also enjoyed painting the wicked woods and the bramble that lay behind the house.

I was happy with the painting, but without the witch it didn’t feel complete.  As I was drawing her, I thought: “What if she is not a horrid witch as the stories portray her, but a kind one?”

Once someone enters the wicked woods, they never return. She is there to protect wandering children from entering the woods by luring them into the gingerbread house.  She sends the children who are truly lost home.  For the ones who have run away from bad homes, she finds a happy home.

For me, she embodies hope.  That’s at least my version of the story and I am sticking to it!

Prints of the Fairy Tale Gingerbread House are available in my shop.  I would like to think it would make a wonderful gift for book lovers,  adults and children alike.

Hope you liked my version of the story. I would also love to know which of the Simple 365 photos from this set you liked.

Wishing you a happy week ahead,
-Soma

Yes, I like your version of the witch story. Wood witches are herbalists….. I think the bad form of witch rose from fear, but I really don’t know.
Your painting is charming and your photos are interesting to see.
They way you do summer sounds wonderful.

What a lovely post, Soma, which is an artist’s delight:) Love the gingerbread house. what watercolor appear do you use? I actually often make the pencil marks part of my watercolor.
while packing, I found back a very nice watercolor palette, that I never used again in my disappointment, after my first time, when through the heat all the colors ran through each other. somehow opening it up gave me hope to use it again, and could throw away my old with cracks away. time changes things! have an adventurous week in art, Jesh

This is a very charming Gingerbread house! I like that you added the witch and changed her role in your imagination–a much more pleasant story. I have young grandsons so I like your Lego figurines in the photos, which are all having an adventure of some sort!

Hi Soma :)) I love your black and white daily photos. What a fantastic idea. I will do the same, we have to remind ourselves sometimes of the simple pleasures that are right in front of us don’t we? Very inspiring! I really like your version of the witch being a beacon of hope for lost/frightened children, you have a great creative mind! :)

You are good with watercolor and I love your suggestion. I have a light board in my closet that I never use … that could change now :) I love your version of the fairy tale … my Mother always told me as a child to “Think Positive”. I believe that is what you have done here. Good for you …

Soma – nice to see a post from you again. One of the biggest lessons I have learned in my drawing is to draw lightly – you are right that it is hard to hide those deep indentations in the paper! And how wonderful that you take a positive view on the role of the “witch” – it reminds me of the Wizard of Oz – there is a good witch and bad witch, a concept Dorothy has to learn to accept!

That’s a charming illustration – straight out of a children’s storybook. That’s a great tip about the drawing and the lightbox transfer. At the moment I’m enjoying going direct to paper with my paint, but I’ll remember this for when I’m playing differently. Your photos are stunning!

Your gingerbread house in the woods is fabulous. You often see little houses like that here in Germany, tucked away in the middle of trees, and I always think about Hänsel and Gretel. The photos are beautiful, it’s always good to remind ourselves that it’s the little things that make life worthwhile, Have a great day, hugs, Valerie
