Wandering Camera – My Summer Days

Sunrise In Northern California Wine Counntry | Whims And Fancies

Preferring much cooler weather, summer is not my most favourite season, really. We don’t travel during summer and most of my time is spent indoors during this time. Therefore, over time, this has become my most productive time of the year. I do stretch my legs during very early summer mornings to avoid cabin fever, and I get to experience some of the most beautiful sunrises at our local park.

The misty and cool mornings of spring have now…

Rainy Morning In Northern California Wine Counntry | Whims And Fancies

After years of drought and dry winters, we finally had a lot of rain last season, and my little flower garden is very content.

Tree Mallow Flower In Northern California Wine Counntry | Whims And Fancies

Wildflower season is gone, but I still have a few summer flowers blooming in the garden.  We planted a Tree Mallow when it was a no more than 2 feet tall, just a sapling.  It started flowering last year, and this year the tree is covered with tiny pink flowers.  I love seeing them swaying in the wind, backlit by the late afternoon sun.

Aside from tending the garden so my beloved green-children survive the hot summer, I also restarted working on a few fabric flowers.   I pulled out my stained glass flowers pattern set and started making blocks for the English Garden quilt again.  My August goal is to finish at least a few of the blocks.  I will be joining One Monthly Goal, hosted by Patty at Elm Street Quilts, a great way to stay on top of those goals.

I also use summer for travel planning.  As I was mapping a route, I thought of the time when we were following GPS instructions and a set of detour signs got us to a road-closed sign.  We were in tears from laughing so hard.  That only strengthened my hate for GPS, and I pulled out my trusty map.

Red Telephone Box Travel Bag

I had the idea of a Red Telephone Box quilt pattern for a long while.   As you know, I love old architecture, and I fell in love with the vine- and plant-decked Oxford windows.   So I added a Victorian street lamp along with a lit-up window – an Oxford window, if you will.  Once I had designed and made the block, it became obvious to me that I wanted to make a travel bag with it.

I not only finished sewing the bag, I also managed to make good progress toward an architecture-influenced painting.

Gothich Architecture Drawing | Whims And Fancies

After meticulously drawing out the previous symmetrical design with drafting tools, I changed my mind and reordered the elements in an asymmetrical fashion.  This is the planning sketch for the new drawing.

Now that the initial drawing is done, I will start adding shading and the ornamental details.  Then I get to start painting it.  Still a long way to go, but I enjoy getting lost inside a long project.

After the last two Wandering Camera posts full of Oxford photos and the drawing, I couldn’t ignore the Red Telephone Box block any more.

Last week I used my very own crossbody bag pattern to make this bag.  I had all the materials at hand, even a fire-engine red zipper.

As this was my One Monthly Goal, I am linking up with Patty at Elm Street

This blue fabric that I had been saving for a special project was perfect for the back.  I love that it has “Destination Adventure” printed on it.

I pieced the red grid on my telephone booth.  However, for easier piecing, I also included pattern sections without the grid.  The grid can be added afterwards via a thick-width machine stitch.  The finished block is 12″, which I find to be a great size for fun projects.  The Red Telephone Box quilt pattern is available on my Etsy shop, if you wish to make one.

Now when I travel, I am all set to walk around in old cities carrying my camera, my little travel journal / notebook, even a sketchbook and colour pencils.  It’s even the perfect size for the day trips we love to take on weekends.

April Showers

April Showers Spring Garden Quilt Pattern | Whims And Fancies

Winter showers bring wild flowers where I live in California, but the old saying about April came to mind while I was drawing this picture, which turned into a quilt pattern soon afterwards.  I love spending time working in my little garden, tending to my flowering plants.  It’s often a struggle to keep them healthy during the harsh summers here, but when rain arrives in late autumn, it brings hope of a good spring.

April Showers On Grass | Whims And Fancies

If the rain continues into April, then I know my plants are going to have a wonderful summer.  After such an April shower few days ago, I had to go for a walk in our local park at the break of dawn.  Rain drops were still clinging to the blades of grass and to the petals of the wild flowers.

Walking in Rain with Red Umbrella Painting | Whims And Fancies

I love the solitude I find in rain.  I am not confident enough to be seen sporting a red umbrella or wearing a red coat, or even a red pair of boots.   I am a jeans-and-black-T-shirt kind of girl.  My boots are always mud-stained, and I carry a grey umbrella.  However, I can never pass up the idea of a red umbrella in my artwork.

This 12″ April Shower quilt pattern is quite versatile.  I used three shades of red to make mine.  The umbrella can also be made into a multicolour one, or made with a person’s favourite colour.  I used green grass, but I can easily imagine a flowering patch in that area instead.

The April Showers quilt pattern can be found in my Etsy shop.

My rain-loving gardener self is very happy with this block.  It also makes me think of all the walks I went on with my husband while travelling, since those almost always require us to carry umbrellas.   Instead of turning this into a wall hanging, I am thinking of making a bag with it.  That would be me carrying a red umbrella for the first time my life.

Wandering Camera – Music

Violin | Whims And Fancies

Today’s planned Wandering Camera would have required rummaging through photos.  I am under the weather, and not feeling like sitting at the computer much.  I have been playing music quite a bit to while away the sick days.  So, here’s a little peek into my musical world.

This is my old girl.  She was quite scratched up when I got her.  A luthier spruced her up and updated her with new rosewood accessories for me, even customised her a little for my smaller hands.  My violin and I have wonderful times playing together.

Violin In Colour Pencil | Whims And Fancies

Violin is the first musical instrument I learned to play and it will always be my first love.  I made this card using wax colour pencils and turpentine.  I can foresee an enlarged oil painting in my future.

Cello Watercolour Sketch | Whims And Fancies

This was a quick sketch of a cello.  I was too eager to try out a new set of watercolour paints I got at the time as a gift, so I didn’t care to draw it very correctly.  It’s a quick sketch at best, but serves as a reminder to be playful.

Electric Guitar | Whims And Fancies

A few years back, when I was living in Los Angeles, I visited a music store in Hollywood.  It had a good selection of used instruments.  I got a beautiful Fender guitar to play with.  I love the haunting sound of it.

These are the musical instruments quilt patterns I have created so far.  I have gotten requests for a few more.  They are definitely in the works.

This is Supermassive Black Hole.  I named it after one of my favourite songs by Muse.

Piano And My Cat | Whims And Fancies

I play music for myself, but occasionally I have a listener silently sitting by me while I play the piano.  It’s very everyday, but exceptionally special for me.

I hope you liked the photographic journey of today’s Wandering Camera.  I will reply to your comments and visit you back as soon as I start feeling better.

Thank you for sharing your photos and stories too.  I love reading them!   All photography and creative themed posts are welcome.
