Wandering Camera – Clearing Storm

Yosemite Clearning Storm | Whims And Fancies

Welcome to Wandering Camera.

This month I get to share a few clearing storm photos from the Sierra Mountains with you.  This is at my most favourite campgroud there.  It is at just over 10,000 feet in elevation.  Days stay cool, and nights get very cold.  Weather changes here frequently.

Sometimes, if you are lucky, beautiful Mother Nature treats you with a rainstorm, which sets the sky on fire.  The ground reflects that light.  The smell of petrichor envelopes you.  You stand there unsure if the chill in your spine is caused by the cool wind or the spectacular drama that is unfolding around you.

We were resting back at the campground after a mountain walk on one of the many trails around there, when suddenly the rain came, followed by a full rainbow.

Then the dark clouds gave way to fiery orange and red ones against the background of an electric blue sky with just a hint of purple showing through.  We stood there speechless with admiration.

I took these photos while I was still figuring out my camera.  I am hoping for another opportunity to photograph a clearing storm in the Sierras.

I took this photo in Yosemite National Park during a different visit.  It was pouring rain in the early evening.  After my husband and I carried my photo backpack, stand etc through the snow to the photo spot using a couple of giant umbrellas, the waiting began.

It started getting darker around us with rain continuing to happily patter on our umbrellas.  Then, just as I was ready to give up and pack everything up, it happened.  The rain stopped, the storm clouds parted, and Half Dome and the surroundings were covered by a beautiful purple-orange glow.

Going through these photos left me nostalgic and inspired, so I sketched this scene, and hoping to start painting it later today.  It has been a while since I have been to the mountains, I think it’s time!

Thank you so much for visiting, leaving such lovely comments and of course, sharing your photos and stories as well.  I love reading them!  All photography and creative themed posts are welcome.

Wandering Camera – Thistles

Scottish Thistle Watercolour | Whims And Fancies

Welcome to this month’s Wandering Camera.

Thistles are not what one would necessarily call very pretty flowers.  They are a wild sort that grows on invasive thorny plants.  Yet the fuchsia colour is undeniably vibrant and beautiful enough for me to seek out and photograph them, and paint them afterwards as well.

A few months ago, on our third road trip in Scotland, I was looking forward to spotting and photographing them on walking trails.  I found quite a few variations of the flower in different areas.

I hope you enjoy this set of my photos of wild thistles.

This is the only one that I photographed in a garden.

I took this photo by the mountainside, bracing myself against 40 – 50 mph wind gusts.  Considering the effort it took me to take this photo, I feel I brought a bit of the Scottish spirit back with me!

Thistles are not grand, but definitely tough, wild, and have a strong aptitude for survival.  This little prickly weed has not only got the status of being the national flower of Scotland, it has also placed itself in different varieties of stylised art.

I too have succumbed to the magic of thistle.  Hope you enjoyed the photos!

Wandering Camera – Woodland Walk

Northern California Woodland Walk | Whims And Fancies

Welcome to the very first revival of Wandering Camera – a monthly photography linky party.

There are trails that meander through the forest in the mountains about 27 miles from our home.  By late spring the area becomes hot and arid, but during the winter months it turns into a lush green woodland.  The rainwater then brings beautiful early spring wild flowers.   I love to walk amongst these trees, specially on cloudy days or closer to twilight.

Self-portrait – walking into the unknown

I find the forest eerie, but at the same time the trees make it a safe place to hide and explore.

A few months ago, I wanted to spend the wintry morning of my birthday walking on one those forest trails in the mountains leaving the small adjacent town below.  Trees dominate the landscape, but a closer look always reveals so much more.

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

I love to photograph forests and trees, they inspire me to create.  I had previously shared this favourite poem of mine, Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening, written by Robert Frost.  I hope you will indulge my wanting to share the poem here once again.

Wandering Camera Revival

A couple of years ago I decided to take one photo per day for 365 days to expand my photography skills.   At the same time, I also hosted a linky party called Wandering Camera and invited you to join me by linking up your monthly photos.  Project 365 ended, and so did Wandering Camera.  Since then I have travelled quite a bit and have taken a LOT of photos.  Sadly though, they have stayed locked up in the darkness of my digital storage.

I am getting back to photography and Wandering Camera is also making a return.

On the last Thursday of every month, I would love for you to join me by linking up your photos.  Posts with your project photos (sewing, painting, etc.) are most welcome as well.

You can add any number of links to your posts from the previous month, or write a new post to link up.  It was a lot of fun last time, and I can’t wait to see your posts again.  The first link-up with be in June.

I have already started wandering with my camera again.

Last week it was fairly cloudy outside, perfect weather for flower photography.  Despite my deadly allergies, I hazarded spending a little time outside in the garden, taking photos.

I don’t do much macro/close-up photography.  Every now and then I get the urge to play with that though, and flowers make great subjects.  So out I went, camera stand in the crook of one arm and camera dangling from the other.

Knowing how much I love iris and larkspur, Mary from Needled Mom, sent me a box of iris rhizomes and a packet of larkspur seeds from her garden.  Thank You so much, Mary!

Now they are blooming in our garden and swaying in the wind.

All those flower photos made me finish this drawing of thistle flowers based on photos I took in Scotland.  I started this drawing so long ago, now I can finally start painting it.

I love capturing the world with my camera.  Sometimes the world is right outside my door.  I hope you will join me once more on Wandering Camera.  Last time I found new pages and made new friends, looking forward to doing that again.

Camera And Photography Linky Party | Whims And Fancies

The first linky party will open on June 28th.  If you follow me via email you will get a reminder.  Here is a little badge for you to share on your page.  Please invite others to participate.
