Wandering Camera – October Stories

Clearning Storm Sunrise Watercolour / Stormy Sky Sunrise Watercolor | Whims And Fancies

Every October, my attention gets blown around like a leaf in the wind and I continuously find myself in the midst of stories, but not necessarily stories made of words.  This Wandering Camera reflects that.

One late afternoon, with rain clouds outside my window, I was practising painting a sunrise after a clearing storm over the mountains of a distant land.  Unintentionally I tend to I create shapes in the painted clouds.  This time I painted a peacock.

Lego Harry Potter Halloween Feast | Whims And Fancies

I set up little patches of decorations everywhere that tell little stories.  I shared with you the Lego Winter Village before.  For October, I have the students back at Hogwarts.  They are getting ready for their Halloween feast.

One morning I found a beautiful rainbow right outside my backdoor.  I wondered what it would be like to follow one.

Solitary Rose And Ticking Clock | Whims And Fancies

I have a weakling rose plant in my garden that gives one beautiful flower every year.  This one was too heavy for the stem, so I brought it inside.  One of my cats knocked the vase over trying to eat a leaf, so I moved it to the mantelpiece where the clocks are (I collect clocks).  That in turn made me think of a story about a solitary rose and a ticking clock.

Earlier this month I showed the quilt block I made from my new pattern, Shattered Star.  I got the idea after seeing ice shards floating away as we admired the Esmark Glacier up close near Svalbard.  That block was about stars and nebulae

I made this block using the vibrant colours of Halloween.  The swirls in the fabric and the shards in the design make me think of the mysteries of smoke and mirrors.

Bookshelf Of A Magician - Ink And Watercolour Painting | Whims And Fancies

My beloved ink-and-paper magician is brilliant, but is having trouble procuring books.  So I am building a bibliotheque for him.  Quoting my friend Dixie – a bibliotheque filled with books on practical magic, spells, and alchemy.  As soon as I bring everything to life with a bit of colour, he can have it all.

I love the romanticism of magic and fairy tales.  With the help of the autumn wind, October brings them a bit closer to me and sweeps me off my feet every time.

Wandering Camera – Camping

High Sierra Tioga Pass | Whims And Fancies

If being a good patient was one of my virtues, I would have already recovered from my cold.  Other chronic ailments made it a little worse.  I still have a lingering cough and laryngitis.  It was not the smartest idea to go camping in the mountains after a night of high fever and chills, but I had my reasons, however unreasonable they may have been.  After weeks of not amounting to much, I couldn’t wait to look through the photos I took there.

My husband was also getting over the cold he had caught.  We were feeling better that morning, so we decided to go after all, but with the proviso of not walking any trails or cooking dinner.

I love to camp at 10,000ft (3,048m) because of the cooler temperatures, even though I get altitude sickness there.  Since both of us were still under the weather, it was worse for me this year, and even my husband, who is usually unaffected by altitude change, suffered from it this time.  Despite that, we had a wonderful time puttering around the High Sierra mountains.

We watched the sunset colours transform on Mt. Dana and Mt. Gibbs before going down to 6300ft (1,920m) for dinner.

The wind was howling around our tent on the penultimate night.  When I stepped out of the tent for an early morning bathroom break, the sun was still behind the mountains, spreading a warm glow.  The campground was still asleep in the warm tents on that cold, windy morning.  I reached for the camera, then decided to capture the moment only with every fibre of my being instead.

I was feeling too sick to paint en plein air, so I made a quick sketch of the campground to paint later.

Clouds rolled in during the last day.  Low humidity joined high winds, turning it into a red alert day.  That meant it was too dangerous to light a campfire.

I was still not doing any better, so my dear husband talked me into getting a hotel room for our last night there.  We broke camp slowly during the day and spent the rest of the late afternoon revisiting a few places for photography.

We stopped one last time at Mt. Dana and Mt. Gibbs.  Sunlight was fading fast that day due to the clouds.  The mountains unexpectedly turned deep red for a very short time before turning into a dull evening grey.

Heightened altitude sickness put my body to the test this year.  However, spending beautiful days surrounded by the towering granite mountains and star-studded, cold nights by a campfire was worth every bit of it.

I was standing alone in the middle of a field on a new moon night for this photo, soaking in the darkness and starlight around me.  I don’t remotely regret going.

Good thing we got the hotel, because my high fever returned that night and I lost my voice completely. Next day after breakfast I felt a little better.  We walked around Mono Lake before driving home.

High Sierra is such an amazing place. I am happy to be able to share just a few of the photos I took there with you.

Wandering Camera – Clearing Storm

Yosemite Clearning Storm | Whims And Fancies

Welcome to Wandering Camera.

This month I get to share a few clearing storm photos from the Sierra Mountains with you.  This is at my most favourite campgroud there.  It is at just over 10,000 feet in elevation.  Days stay cool, and nights get very cold.  Weather changes here frequently.

Sometimes, if you are lucky, beautiful Mother Nature treats you with a rainstorm, which sets the sky on fire.  The ground reflects that light.  The smell of petrichor envelopes you.  You stand there unsure if the chill in your spine is caused by the cool wind or the spectacular drama that is unfolding around you.

We were resting back at the campground after a mountain walk on one of the many trails around there, when suddenly the rain came, followed by a full rainbow.

Then the dark clouds gave way to fiery orange and red ones against the background of an electric blue sky with just a hint of purple showing through.  We stood there speechless with admiration.

I took these photos while I was still figuring out my camera.  I am hoping for another opportunity to photograph a clearing storm in the Sierras.

I took this photo in Yosemite National Park during a different visit.  It was pouring rain in the early evening.  After my husband and I carried my photo backpack, stand etc through the snow to the photo spot using a couple of giant umbrellas, the waiting began.

It started getting darker around us with rain continuing to happily patter on our umbrellas.  Then, just as I was ready to give up and pack everything up, it happened.  The rain stopped, the storm clouds parted, and Half Dome and the surroundings were covered by a beautiful purple-orange glow.

Going through these photos left me nostalgic and inspired, so I sketched this scene, and hoping to start painting it later today.  It has been a while since I have been to the mountains, I think it’s time!

Thank you so much for visiting, leaving such lovely comments and of course, sharing your photos and stories as well.  I love reading them!  All photography and creative themed posts are welcome.

Wandering Camera – Thistles

Scottish Thistle Watercolour | Whims And Fancies

Welcome to this month’s Wandering Camera.

Thistles are not what one would necessarily call very pretty flowers.  They are a wild sort that grows on invasive thorny plants.  Yet the fuchsia colour is undeniably vibrant and beautiful enough for me to seek out and photograph them, and paint them afterwards as well.

A few months ago, on our third road trip in Scotland, I was looking forward to spotting and photographing them on walking trails.  I found quite a few variations of the flower in different areas.

I hope you enjoy this set of my photos of wild thistles.

This is the only one that I photographed in a garden.

I took this photo by the mountainside, bracing myself against 40 – 50 mph wind gusts.  Considering the effort it took me to take this photo, I feel I brought a bit of the Scottish spirit back with me!

Thistles are not grand, but definitely tough, wild, and have a strong aptitude for survival.  This little prickly weed has not only got the status of being the national flower of Scotland, it has also placed itself in different varieties of stylised art.

I too have succumbed to the magic of thistle.  Hope you enjoyed the photos!
