Capturing A Little History

Jedburgh Abbey Doorway Details

Drawing of a doorway detail, Jedburgh Abbey, Scotland

In school, I was never very good at history, I always managed to only pass by the skin of my teeth.  I had the hardest time following the syllabus.  Whenever I came across an era that I liked, I researched, read and dove in, completely ignoring everything else that was being taught in the classroom.  The good thing about being a grown up is that now I can continue to do that without the pressure of grades.  I also don’t have to stick to just books, I can now travel to places of historic interest as well.  I love prehistory, archaeology and ruins.   That took me to Scotland twice.

Sword Relief On Stone From Iona Abbey

Drawing of a stone relief, Iona Abbey, Scotland

I recently started drawing again after a long hiatus.  I missed the scratching sound of pencil on paper too much.  I went through my Scotland photos and picked out a few to draw.  In the evening after a long day, it’s wonderfully relaxing to revisit the places through drawing while listening to some comforting old TV show or movie.  I think these drawings would make nice embroidery designs too.

DSLR Camera Quilt Pattern

I could not have done these drawings without my trusty camera.  I made the SLR camera pattern many months ago and never got around to making it.  My friend Amanda recently made this pillow from that pattern.  I squealed in joy when I saw the picture.  I LOVE the way she quilted it.  I already told her that I am going to copy that quilting design when I make my quilted camera.

We must be ‘soul sisters’. I was never interested in history as a student, but enjoy it now. I did a lot of research on the pioneers who came to my home area to settle. Love your drawings. And old movies! The camera cushion is super sweet! How nice that Amanda sent you a photo of it!

I love your drawings – especially the stone relief one. They would make nice embroideries but I think they are already beautiful as drawings and would look lovely framed :)

Your drawings are quite beautiful and I especially like the sword with the flowers. They would indeed make gorgeous embroidery!

Your door would be beautiful stitched in needlepoint and a quilt would be very nice.

Love these drawings! They are so fabulous! They would make great prints or you could make your own fabric with them on spoonflower or something :)

Thanks for sharing my little pillow :)

Your sketching is wonderful. I would love to see some of those done in threads!

I love the camera idea and, yes, the quilting is perfect with it.

I hope you guys haven’t drowned up there yet. It sounds pretty bad, but the rain is so welcomed too.

I can sort of sketch to capture an idea, but to make it really look like what I am seeing, well, it certainly lacks where yours don’t :-)

I could see these as stained glass patterns or as reverse applique in addition to embroidery.

Well done and thanks for sharing.

Your drawings are beautiful, embroidery would be a great avenue to explore but Billie and Susie are right that they would make excellent framed art. You have so many talents, I can see it must be hard to decide what to do to play with your creativity next. The quilting on the camera looks great, not sure I would have realized that it would turn out to be a star. Neat effect!!

They would make a nice embroidery pattern, but these are gorgeous and should be framed and hung up on their own.
