Wandering Camera – Woodland Walk

Northern California Woodland Walk | Whims And Fancies

Welcome to the very first revival of Wandering Camera – a monthly photography linky party.

There are trails that meander through the forest in the mountains about 27 miles from our home.  By late spring the area becomes hot and arid, but during the winter months it turns into a lush green woodland.  The rainwater then brings beautiful early spring wild flowers.   I love to walk amongst these trees, specially on cloudy days or closer to twilight.

Self-portrait – walking into the unknown

I find the forest eerie, but at the same time the trees make it a safe place to hide and explore.

A few months ago, I wanted to spend the wintry morning of my birthday walking on one those forest trails in the mountains leaving the small adjacent town below.  Trees dominate the landscape, but a closer look always reveals so much more.

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

Northern California Woodland Walk | Whims And Fancies

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

I love to photograph forests and trees, they inspire me to create.  I had previously shared this favourite poem of mine, Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening, written by Robert Frost.  I hope you will indulge my wanting to share the poem here once again.

What lovely lush scenes with the moss and ferns. We are in the middle of a very un-British heatwave at the moment and we haven’t had rain in weeks!

I enjoyed your beautiful forest photos and the poem, Soma. I was meaning to make a Wandering Camera post but for various reasons I haven’t managed to. I’ll be sure to link up next time. :)

I love your closeups of the moss growing on the trunks. And your artful rendition of being in the woods. I’ve enjoyed drawing in my cabin journal lately, but my works are more reproductions in ink from photographs I’ve taken. – Margy

I love walking in the forest. That card is fantastic! I love the contrast of the black and the spring green!

Your artwork is SO thoughtful and beautiful. I also adore your photography–especially of the licorice fern at the very end. The Indians in our area would dry the root and eat them. ;D

Your close-up photography is so well done – I especially like the one where it looks like the lichen is spreading its fingers over the tree! Thanks for hosting and have a terrific week!

I am so happy you shared that poem. It is beautiful.Beautiful poem to go with beautiful photography! The path into the woods looks so inviting. I grew up where there were woods to go through everywhere I would walk to, even school. Your photos took me back to those memories. Thank you. Have a great weekend. Rasz

Beautiful photos, thank you for a glimpse of that lovely forest.
I do not understand how to link a photo although I have one to share. I do not have an internet address (as far as I know!).

I, too, as you know, love trees and forests, don’t find them eerie at all, although last week as I walked Rocco along the Greenway, I saw the biggest coyote I’ve ever seen cross our path at the bend a little ways ahead. She quite literally melted into the bushes on the other side after giving us a thoughtful look. Needless to say, I decided to not walk up to the point where she had crossed, being all alone…They aren’t known to attack humans, actually scared of them and quite wonderful creatures, but if she had pups, and Rocco isn’t as big as she was… :-) I photograph things that intrigue me or that I like, so I’ll be sure to link some of the photos up next month, perhaps coincided with my I Like/Love post. :-) Beautiful GREEN photos Soma! :-)

What a lovely poem and photoseries!
We have a bad heat and dryness to, in this year still more than in the previous, sigh! The leaves are falling down from the trees and bushes, sigh!
In my post “Seeds” you find a poem, what I like (in English).
    Enjoy your time :)

I spent many years in the forest. Living 3 of those years totally remote and in a tent. I loved it and I miss my wanderings in the woods. Wonderful photos and I love your painting. Quite mysterious.

This is such a great idea. With amazing cameras on cell phones, most of us have a camera with us at all times, but I’m shy about getting mine out, afraid I’ll look too touristy or like an old lady trying to keep up with the teenagers. But this had encouraged me to maybe be a little less timid – and if anyone IS paying that much attention, I hope they realize the camera is not pointed at me! I’ll be gathering steam for next month!
