My Show And Tell

Rainbow Star Quilt Pattern | Whims And Fancies

I am really wowed by the number of you who decided to join the online quilt trunk show.  Thank you!!!  I have gotten so much inspiration from your beautiful quilts, it will last me more than a lifetime.  I was going to quietly host the trunk show, but I was subjected to peer pressure from my dear friends to do a show and tell as well.

I have been doing art all my life, mostly in the form of painting and photography.  I started sewing in 2012 when I came across paper piecing.  Since then I have been drawing with fabric in the form of designing paper piecing patterns.  Here are a few finishes from my humble collection.  I have a link under each picture if you wish to know a little more about that work.

Rainbow star is one of the earliest wall hangings I made.  I spend a lot of nights outdoors, enjoying the Universe through my telescope.  This wall hanging represents the lifecycle of a star.  The three blocks are Starlight Converging, A New Star and Starlight Diverging.

Union Jack Quilt Pattern | Whims And Fancies

Union Jack

I spoil my cats by making lots of quilts for them.  My first quilt is an Union Jack mini, which is my kitty’s favourite quilt.  Then I made this lap quilt for my husband and a cushion for myself.

Music Instruments Quilt Patterns | Whims And Fancies

Piano Sonata & Supermassive Black Hole

Playing musical instruments always evokes certain emotions in me.  I tried to reflect the characters of calm and harmonious classical music and the dynamic mood of rock music using quilting and colours.

Greek Alphabet Quilt Patterns | Whims And Fancies

Greekness

This quilt was inspired by the term To Hellenikon or Greekness, coined by Herodotus.  I love visiting old abbey ruins. The colours were drawn from the colours of Monks’ habits – khaki and brown,  old and hard-wearing.  They represent the everlasting influence of Greek civilization. Using the layout and horizontal quilting, I mimicked a page from an exercise book, used by someone who is learning to write.

Freedom Read Quilt Pattern | Whims And Fancies

FREADOM

I made this mini as a remembrance of my grandmother.  Although she was denied formal education because of being a woman, it never stopped her from reading and learning the value of equality.  She passed on her love of reading to me which continues to free my mind, just as it did hers.   I also made this mini in red, white and blue for the country that lets me have a voice.

Fair Isle Star Quilt Pattern | Whims And Fancies

Behind Blue Eyes

I was reading up on the history of British knitting, and these patterns are based on traditional knitting designs.  This is a quilt I made for my special blue-eyed cat, Mr. Montague Wilberforce.  He loves to lounge on this quilt while being close to us.

Spring Kites Quilt Pattern | Whims And Fancies

Spring Kites

I have always loved kites.  I have often daydreamed of being carried away by one.  This little mini is one of my favourites.  This was my first time hand quilting.  I hand quilted the puffy clouds and I love the texture.

I hope you enjoyed my little trunk show.  You can find my other works under the Finished Works tab at the top of the page.  It also includes knitting, painting, etc.

Now it’s time for prizes!!  Alongside Whims And Fancies, I also have Aurifil Threads, Meadow Mist Designs, Craftsy, Fat Quarter Shop, Sew Fresh Quilts, and Cooking Up Quilts sponsoring this event.  Many thanks to all of them for supporting this online quilt trunk show so generously.

My heartfelt thanks to all of you for participating and also to those of you who visited the blogs and left comments.  It was great to see everyone visiting each other.  As I mentioned earlier, I am not very fond of competition.  There was no judging, this quilt show was just for fun.  I randomly selected the winners for the prize packages.

Soma, thanks for having the trunk show! I really enjoyed looking at all the gorgeous entries….and I wasn’t able to look at them all but goodness, what I saw was awesome. Your musical instruments hangings really do look peaceful in the case of the classical and upbeat for the rock instruments! And all your other projects are great….I really love the kites.

dropped by to say “hi” from Linky Tuesday, what a wonderful oeuvre, for homesick reasons I particularly like your collection of union flag items and that the white stripes are thick and thin in all the correct places – it’s so seldom they are – Chris @madebyChrissieD :D

I really enjoyed the trunk show. Though I’m not sure I’d have enough quilts to do it annually, I’d love to see what everyone else comes up with. Love all your minis, I couldn’t pick a favorite out of that set. Thanks so much for hosting the trunk show.

As one of your peers who pressured, I am delighted to see that you put on your own trunk show Soma! Wow Wee all of these quilts are so gorgeous! Do you realize how incredible it is that you started your quilting journey with quilts, like Rainbow Star, that most of us consider advanced skill levels? I’m not even going to mention… oh heck, I’ll mention it: you designed that pattern yourself too! You have many amazing talents and we are so lucky that you chose to direct them at quilting!
Oh yes, that would be great if you made the Trunk Show an annual event. I wonder if a first time linky party every got such a great turn out as you did? you must have been so busy all week visiting everyone. It was a lot of fun seeing people’s shows!
I keep scrolling back and forth as I write paragraphs here. I just got to the part about the prize announcements and you could have knocked me over with a feather! I am a huge fan of yours and Lorna’s and Cheryl’s patterns, as well as a frequent shopper at Fat Quarter Shop and Craftsy, so this is so awesome to have been one of your prize winners! Thank you Soma!

I cannot think of a more perfect crescendo to this wonderful Trunk Full of Quilts than to peek in your amazing trunk, Soma. I am always inspired by your lovely stitching, particularly your paper piecing lovelies. Your musical instruments are both delightful and your Union Jack is singing the most patriotic of songs; it is superb. Thank you for hosting this fun event. It has been an inspirational week. It has been the best fun to peek into others’ lovely trunks. Each trunk is filled with inspiration, each one is filled with it’s own unique artistry. Thank you Soma……and congratulations to the winners!
