Lego Harry Potter Quilt Patterns | Whims And Fancies

Welcome to the Lego Harry Potter Quilt Along.  I love Lego!  I have bins and bins full of them along with the ones I have on display.  I usually set up my Lego Hogsmeade Village alongside the Hogwarts Castle every September.

A big part of me lives within the pages of my books and I love the friends I make there.  That’s how I came across Harry Potter.  I am not a die-hard Harry Potter fan, so you won’t catch me jumping on any of the new Potter bandwagons.  However, I like the stories told within the seven books very much.  As I finish reading the words “All was well”, I imagine a happy future for all my friends.

Lego Harry Potter | Whims And Fancies

Then, a few years ago, my husband got me the Lego Harry Potter video game to cheer me up.  Since then the game has become a form of “Patronus” for me.  I didn’t quilt at the time, but I wanted to make a Lego Harry Potter quilt ever since I learnt how to make patterns.  As I was playing this game during the holidays last December, the idea came flooding back.  As I make my quilt, I would love for you to join me on this quilt along.

Since this quilt is going to be the embodiment of happiness, there will be no dark magic blocks.

The patterns are paper pieced.

I will release 2 patterns per month, a total of 12 blocks.

Mostly they will be for 12″ square blocks, but there are a few that will be of larger sizes.

I added breaks in between for us to catch up.  It allows me a little breathing room as well.

I like my blocks to have nice details, so the patterns are of intermediate level. However, if you are a patient beginner, you can do this too. I have had many beginners paper piece my advanced blocks quite successfully. Some even started paper piecing for the first time using my patterns. I encourage you to give this a try even if you think it is beyond your skill level.

Pattern Download Information

Unfortunately I will have to put some restrictions around the pattern downloads.  After the Doctor Who QAL, I had to chase down people who were selling products made from our patterns, convince them of their wrongdoing and try to get them to unlist their products from their Etsy shops.  That was extremely unsavoury.

I still really want to share these patterns with you while trying to minimize the chance of that happening again.  Therefore:

  • I will publish the patterns on the last Thursday of every month and you will have 2 days to download the patterns.
  • The download link will be removed permanently on Saturday morning.

I am extremely sorry about this.  Pattern writing takes a tremendous amount of time and this is the only way I can share the patterns while minimizing others exploiting them.  I hope you understand.

The patterns are for personal use only.

Concerning Facebook – I usually don’t get to post on Facbook until Friday. The Facebook posts are courtesy posts. If you don’t want to wait and risk missing patterns, then I suggest you subscribe to the email notification on the website. That email goes out Thursday morning when the patterns are published.

Please note that this page is for the dates only.  I DO NOT update the links on an ongoing basis.  I only link the posts of past patterns as time permits.

Always check the front page/home page for pattern download links.

Sharing your work

If you are on Facebook, you can join the group Pictures With Paper Piecing and share your blocks there.

You can also share them on this Flickr group.

Additionally, I will be hosting linky parties here for you to show off your finished blocks.

The quilt layout I have in mind lends itself to having the same background for all the blocks. Since everyone paper-pieces differently, it’s very hard to give a good estimate. I would generally recommend 1/4 yard of background fabric for each block. 12 blocks would therefore require approximately 3 yards of fabric. I think 3.5 yards of fabric will be more than enough.

I suggest you use a fabric that you don’t mind having leftovers from. If you want to be cautious in your purchase, then make sure that you can repurchase the background fabric easily. I really like the Stonehenge fabric so I got 4 yards of it.

Other than that, you will probably end up using fabrics from your stash. That’s what I will be doing. Wait until you see the pattern, figure out the colours you want to use and then decide if you want to purchase any specific fabric for the block.

It’s best to pick non-directional fabric. That makes for easier piecing.

Obtaining Previous Patterns

I have been getting a fair number of enquires about the patterns.  There are too many emails for me to reply to individually.

I have already re-released the first two patterns along with the second set of patterns. I am unable to continuously re-release the patterns. Please do not share them via emails, as is stated in the pattern files.

I have also been asked if I am willing to sell the patterns.  I am NOT selling the patterns, but here’s an option for you –

One of my favourite rescue charities is Maine Coon Adoptions.  If you make a donation to them of $4.00 per pattern with a minimum of $10.00, then email me an invoice showing that you have done so, I will email you the number of patterns matching your donation.

You can also get the whole set of 15 patterns for $50.00.

This is the only way to obtain previous patterns.

I am not usually at my computer on the weekends.  I will email you the files as soon as I can.

Many thanks to Suze Arnold for this brilliant idea and for the handsome donation she made.

You can make the donation through their Facebook page or their website.

Harry Potter Quilt Along Fabric Giveaway | Whims And Fancies

I decided not to pursue any outside sponsors for this event and fully sponsor it myself.  I will do a couple more giveaways along the way, so there will be other chances to win.  Make sure to follow and play along.

As a thank you for reading my blog, I want to do a little celebratory giveaway.  My giveaways are for my readers only.  If you are a subscriber, leave a comment here to be entered in the giveaway.  For additional chances, spread the word about this QAL on any social media or your blog and leave one comment per share.  I will choose a winner on July 14th.
