Doctor Who QAL – Tardis In Flight

Tardis Doctor Who Quilt Pattern

“I wanted to see the universe, so I stole a Time Lord and I ran away. And you were the only one mad enough.”

Here we are, the final block of the Doctor Who Along. I always planned on making this block, the Tardis flying through the Time Vortex. I picked out the purple fabric in the window specially for this block couple of years ago, just never got around to making it until this QAL started. Can you believe it, this is the very first pattern I drafted for this QAL and had to wait this long to share it with you?!

We started our QAL with Caroline’s Tardis waiting for you to come along on the journey. The Doctor Who Along may have finished, but the Doctor continues his journey through Time and Space, in his Tardis.

I recently made this block and it is amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing this pattern. I wanted to let you know (if you didn’t already) that section G is missing a number. Number 9 is misplaced to a side section and the bottom middle piece is not numbered. I can’t wait to make the other blocks!!

    • Soma Acharya says:

Thank you so much! It’s my very favorite and I am so glad you liked it. I completely missed that number on section G, I will fix the pattern and reupload it. Thank you for letting me know.

Can’t wait to see your finished tops! I have 12 of the 20 blocks quilted. I am doing quilt as you go, and will then sew them all together and sash the back. Still debating on a border.

Thanks for all of your hard work to make this QAL a success!

    • Soma Acharya says:

So glad to hear you are having a good time with the QAL. Great idea with quilt as you go, I need to give that a try. We are showing the quilt tops tomorrow :)

      Have fun!

I think this is my favourite!

  4. Cheryl says:

Your block is just perfection! The tiny pieces and the colors you used just make this block look wonderful!

    • Soma Acharya says:

Thank you so much, Cheryl! I thought of this block for so long and was really happy to see it finally all done :)

  5. I always look forward to seeing your new block each week. I can’t wait to see all of them together!

I’m so glad you shared at Needle and Thread Thursday!

  6. Oh, Soma! Your block is perfect! Love the fabrics you chose. It is perfect! Looking forward to seeing the top all pieced together. This is going to be fabulous!

    • Soma Acharya says:

Thanks so much, Lorna! I had to buy fabric for this one, and it has arrived. Can’t wait to cut and start sewing :)

  7. Vera says:

wow! your blocks are so precise and I’m always amazed by your fabric choice! fab!

    • Soma Acharya says:

Thanks so much, Vera!! You should see how many times I go back and forth before I pick the final fabrics for a given block :)

  8. I just hopped over to your blog from Blossom Heart Quilts and I’m just in love with the whole QAL! I’m going to have to add this to my list of projects that I want to make. Maybe I’ll just have to watch all the episodes of Dr. Who again as I make it :)

    • Soma Acharya says:

Thank you so much, Rachel! I highly recommend watching Doctor Who as you sew these blocks. That’s what I did. Oh, I also listened to Doctor Who audio books too :)

  9. whoa! That’s so cool! I love how you create circles with piecing. It never ceases to amaze me. Perfect fabric too. I can see why you hung on to it so long.

    • Soma Acharya says:

Thanks, Susan! Yes, circles are my weakness, I love to paper piece circles. I am still learning how to not add too many tiny pieces and keep my sanity :)

  10. This is a fabulous block! Honestly, I’d love to have a giant version of this block as it’s own quilt.

    • Soma Acharya says:

Thank you!! Such a great idea and it would be easy to scale too. I am going to make this one at least one more time for a wall-hanging I have in mind.

  11. Deonn says:

I love it! And thank you for sharing the links to all the other Dr. Who blocks. My daughter and I made a Tardis quilt for her fiance’ last summer. It meant as much to him as her ring meant to her. I’m slowly making my way through all the Dr. Who seasons on Fantastic!

    • Soma Acharya says:

I am glad you liked it! He will treasure that Tardis quilt forever, that is a great gift :)

Have fun watching Doctor Who! As you can tell, it’s our favourite show :)

  12. Karen says:

Thank you so much for these (and your other) free blocks! You area a greatly talented lady!

    • Soma Acharya says:

You are welcome, I hope you enjoy making them.

That is really very nice of you to say!! Thank you :)

      Happy Sewing,

  13. VickiT says:

That looks great. Thank you for the hard work you’ve done. Please, could you check the download? I have attempted it in both IE10 and also Chrome and it is giving an error code.

    thank you

    • Soma Acharya says:

      Hi Vicki,

Thank you so much!! I have been switching servers and some things fell through the crack in the time and space. It’s all fixed now.
Thank you so much for letting me know, the download link is fixed now.

  14. Looks like you’ve come full circle ;)

    What a fun block!

    • Soma Acharya says:

Thanks, Amanda!! I had just enough fabric for the circular pieces. How lucky was that!!

And yes, definitely full circle :)

  15. DebV says:

This makes a complete circle – Tardis to Tardis. Thanks for all you and Caroline have done for this QAL. I have one angel, 2 of the Vastha Nerada, hook the top to the bottom on the watches, thisTardis times 2. And then I will be finished with the piecing. I should get some pictures on flickr too. Not bad for doing 2 quilts and trying to keep it secret. How do you and Caroline plan to finish the top? I was thinking of sashing and a nice border from some to the Spoonflower Dr. Who fabric. Thanks again.

    • Soma Acharya says:

I am so impressed that you are making two quilts. I will look forward to seeing those blocks on Flickr.

I am making mine a one person quilt, so we can use it on the sofa, chair etc. as well as on the bed. I am going to use 2″ sashing and then a 4″ border all around.

You are welcome, we had so much fun with the QAL!!

  16. dolores says:

Thank you all for doing this. I have only done the first 4 and then felt a little overwhelmed but now I’m thinking my problem was feeling I had to do them all. Silly me. So now I will go back and pick several more and make this for my girl.
    Thanks again…it has been fun!

    • Soma Acharya says:

Of course you don’t have to make all the blocks. That’s why we had so many so you can pick and choose. Your girl will be so happy :)

You are welcome! Caroline and I had a great time planning this.

  17. Susie says:

Love this! Good thing you had the move to distract you!! teehee
Another awesome pattern… I have quite a few Dr Who patterns to get working on for my daughter now, thanks to you!!

    • Soma Acharya says:

Haha..the carpet installers just left, so I can start putting things in the rooms. Can’t wait!

Thanks, Susie!! I am always happy to be the instigator ;)
