Doctor Who QAL – Dalek

Dalek Doctor Who Quilt Block

I was in Norway for the last couple of weeks, and I didn’t want to post a pattern for the Doctor Who quilt along when I would not be available.  Thank you so much for your patience, I hope this pattern makes up for it.  No introduction is needed, I believe, for this guy!  I am really very happy with this Dalek quilt pattern, I hope you like it too.

These are the fabric shades I used for my block -

1 fat quarter for the background

2 shades of grey

Black fabric (small piece)

Yellow fabric for the lights (small pieces)

Little amount of blue for the eye

2 shades of brown – very dark and light brown

2 shades of copper

Dalek Full Body Doctor Who Quilt Pattern

This was the original pattern that I created, but it was too intricate for a 12″ block.  I am almost done enlarging it to make a large wall hanging or a pillow to go with the quilt.  I couldn’t wait any longer to show this to you.  As soon as I am done testing it, I will share the pattern here.

You have been busy while I was away.  I am enjoying looking at all the fantastic blocks on the Doctor.Who.Along Flickr Group immensely.

    Wow! That Dalek is amazing!!

  2. Laurelle C says:

Awesome block! It looks fantastic. Cant wait to start this one. Do you know how big the finished full Dalek block will end up? I would love to have him as the centre of the quilt maybe surrounded by the others. Just a thought as the Dalek is my Hubby favourite and the quilt is for him. Thanks again for making these patterns. :)

    • Soma Acharya says:

Thank you, Laurelle! That is so wonderful of you to make this quilt for your hubby. I think the Dalek will be at least 16 inches. I may have to increase it by a few more inches if some of the sections in the middle part are still too small.

      Happy sewing,
      Soma :)

Worth the wait. This is impressive. I have to do the angel yet (times 2) but I have the fabric and then this and I will be caught up. Having so much fun.

Thank you! I still can’t believe you are making two of each and doing such a great job with them. Can’t wait to see your next set of blocks.

That is just too cool!!! Wonderful work :)

Oh, my goodness, that full-profile Dalek is really something amazing. Like, work of art amazing. I’d say that would be a fabulous pillow or wall hanging to make, but I’m not sure where I could put it in the house and feel comfortable walking by it each day. ;) Ditto with the weeping angel block. But I do love the edited block for the QAL … it feels like it is towering over you as you look up. I just started on my blocks, since I wasn’t originally planning on following along with everything I have to get done, but I just couldn’t resist you guys. I am working on my Time Lord block currently, and my TARDIS block is here: http://sewmuchmischief.blogspot.com/2013/09/bigger-on-inside.html.

    • Soma Acharya says:

Thanks Jessica!! That is so nice of you! I would have to definitely put it outside of the bedroom, don’t think I can sleep with a Dalek staring at me. LOL!!

I am so glad you joined in. I took a quick look this morning, your Tardis block looks amazing! I am going to go back later to read more about that fantastic bag you made.

      Take care,
      Soma

Wow, love this block! It would make the perfect pillowcase for the quilt! I’m still collecting but haven’t had time to make any as my life is topsy turvy atm. Cheeky adult son I am going to make it for wants it backed with the Tardis! I told him he should take up quilting as I don’t think I’m up to making a paper pieced queen bed sized Tardis from the 12″ block!!
    Cheers,
    Robyn

Another fab block! The daleks are my main Dr Who childhood memory!

  8. Kathleen says:

Soma, you never cease to amaze me. Looking forward to the larger block too!!

    • Soma Acharya says:

Thank you Kathleen!! You are so sweet. I am really excited about making the large one, may have to buy some extra fabric :)

  9. Woohoo! (or should that be Woo-WHO?!) That’s fantastic! I’m a block and a half behind, thanks to other commitments and a running-out-of-fabric crisis, but catching up fast. I can’t wait to get started on this one!

I once met a Dalek on the road outside the museum in Cardiff (the setting of ‘Vincent and the Doctor’. ‘Planet of the Dead’ and ‘the Big Bang’). I’d just finished Cardiff half marathon and there it was. I’m ashamed to say I ran away from it!

    • Soma Acharya says:

Thanks Maggie! I sympathize with you on the commitment front. Glad you are back to sewing Doctor Who blocks again.

Oh wow!! I am happy to hear that you were able to run away from it, I would be running too :)

Congratulations on finishing the half marathon by the way, that’s very impressive!

      Take care,
      -Soma
