Coffee Chemistry

Caffeine Chemistry Quilt Pattern

Purchase Coffee Chemistry Pattern

I am very much a coffee addict – tea too, for that matter – anything with caffeine in it.  Looking back, I realised that the addiction started in college.  Before then, my version of coffee was a cup of hot milk with a sprinkle of instant coffee.  I am serious!!  A caffeine quilt pattern was definitely in order.

I have always loved chemistry and astronomy the most, so I was pretty sure I wanted to study the chemistry of stars because that was a perfect blend of the two.  If only it were that simple!  Once I started college, I took a plethora of science classes just because, and I had the hardest time deciding on a major because I wanted to study everything.  Later on I moved on to study computers because they were new and seemed extremely interesting too.  However, looking through a telescope still fascinates and humbles me and chemistry still excites me.

I was torn between making a coffee-themed quilt pattern and a science-themed quilt pattern.  In the end I decided to blend the two and created Coffee Chemistry block.

I envisioned the caffeine molecule drawn on a chalkboard, and luckily, I had the perfect fabric on hand for that.   The pattern is done in three sections – the cup, the arrow and the molecule.

The block is fairly easy to make.  However, I also added an embroidered version of the molecule in the pattern, just in case you weren’t feeling like paper piecing the molecule.

I am seeing a bag in my future using the above block.  It will be a fun bag to carry around, proclaiming my love of science and coffee.  I know some of you are either yourselves caffeine addicts like I am (you know who you are!  *wink*) or  you definitely have someone in your family who is one.  Perhaps you can make a fun mug rug with this pattern?

Need to fill my cup!

What a fun block! I actually didn’t get into drinking coffee until after college…but it’s a standard item around here now!

I love your block. I’ve never felt the need to a little kitchen wall hanging, but I might need a coffee chemistry block beside my coffee maker.

I love your block! I have made hot pads with embroidered molecules, but not with the cup. Without the cup they can only guess what the molecule might be! Thanks for sharing what you have created.

What a fun block!! This fits me so well, too, Soma…. I was a medical technologist and had minors in Biology and Chemistry, and drank a lot of coffee, too, while studying and doing lab reports!!
    Thanks for a great pattern!!

I have impatiently been awaiting this block!! When I first saw it, I knew the molecule would be an awesome mug rug for my husband. And then I saw that he was using scrap paper at work to put his coffee mug on! And it was a done deal. This is on my list to make this week!!

Quite simply brilliant!! What a clever design you have plucked out of the universe!! I dare say college/university is the starting point of a lot of people’s caffeine addiction!!

This block is so cool. Now to figure out someone who would really appreciate it. I am really enjoying this hop and also seeing what people come up with for a college theme. My college days are long gone, but I guess the memories aren’t. Adding the chemistry of it, makes it that much more interesting. Thanks.

This is such a great block, I can think of many allnighters with this theme…mine would be a can of Diet Coke though as that was my go-to in college. I have since become a mocha coffee person :)

*hands clapping in glee*…I beyond love this one! Had difficulty in chemistry thru highschool, took organic chem in college, aced it and absolutely loved it. My teacher (and I) loved coffee too. I never saw him without a mug LOL. Thanks so for sharing this one…know which one I’m doing next?!

The chemistry of stars sounds like a fascinating thing to study though, as you say, there are so many interesting courses. If I won the lottery, I think I’d become an eternal student… This is such a clever idea. I love it! I’m totally addicted to tea. I’ll have google the chemical composition of that :)
